⚡️ 2024 Canadian Electrical Code Changes for Hot Tubs – What Regina Homeowners Need to Know

Effective June 1, 2025, significant changes to the Canadian Electrical Code will impact hot tub installations across Saskatchewan. These updates are designed to improve safety and reduce electrical hazards, and compliance is mandatory for any new or upgraded hot tub installation.

At JLB Electric, your trusted licensed electrical contractor in Regina, we’re fully prepared to meet these new standards. Below is a breakdown of the 2024 electrical code changes you need to know before installing or replacing a hot tub.

🛠️ Grounding & Separation Requirements (Rule 68-058 3) c)

If you’re installing a hot tub directly on bare ground, a copper ground ring is now required.

It must be installed 450–600mm from the tub Buried 100–150mm deep into the ground Cement pads no longer qualify as acceptable ground separation

If a copper ring cannot be installed, an approved non-conductive barrier must be used.

This includes materials like:

✅ Rubber matting ✅ Wood or composite decking ✅ Wood-plastic or fiberglass materials

The barrier must extend 1.5 meters around the hot tub to maintain electrical isolation and safety.

🔌 Disconnect Requirements (Rule 68-072)

The hot tub disconnect must now meet stricter placement and safety rules:

It must be installed outside the dwelling unit It must be lockable and easily accessible If located within 1.5–3 meters of the hot tub, it must be: ✅ GFCI protected, or ✅ Installed behind a permanent barrier

These rules ensure quick and safe disconnection in case of emergency or maintenance.

🚫 Homeowners Cannot Install Hot Tubs Themselves

According to TSASK (Technical Safety Authority of Saskatchewan), hot tubs must be installed by a licensed electrical contractor.

Homeowners are not permitted to handle electrical connections or installations under these regulations. This is a mandatory requirement to ensure safety, compliance, and insurance coverage.
